In first grade library we get to know all about the areas of the library and the parts of a book.  Students have fun getting to know the "E-room", the nonfiction area, and are introduced to "Junior Fiction":  favorite easy chapter books.  We spend a lot of time focusing on the benefits of reading nonfiction to support our learning, and use nonfiction texts, databases, and websites to support the topics that we are reading about in our fiction books.

Our first grade library curriculum covers the following library and literature skills:
  • Developing an awareness of quality literature and authors
  • Distinguishing between fiction and nonfiction
  • Distinguishing between different types of fiction genres
  • Using strategies to locate "just right" books
  • Locating books in the library using call numbers
